Apprenticeship Programs in Sacramento

Most times, you pay tuition to attend a trade school. But that's not the case with apprenticeship programs in Sacramento. As an apprentice, you'll work under an experienced supervisor to learn specific skills to do a job. You'll also be required to attend school for a certain number of hours each year, as a part of the program. But the difference between a trade school and an apprenticeship program is that you'll get paid to work as an apprentice and there's no cost to attend classes. Your hourly wage is typically a percentage of what a skilled worker would earn, and increases as you work through the program. There are many apprenticeship programs in Sacramento, each with different requirements.
  1. Sacramento Area Electrical Training Center

    • The Sacramento Area Electrical Training Center is the instructional home for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 340 and the Sacramento chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. They have an apprenticeship program available for inside wiremen (electricians) that lasts for five years. To apply, you must be at least 18 year old and have a high school diploma or GED certificate and a valid California driver's license. They also require sealed transcripts showing that you received a "C" or better in high school or college-level algebra. All prospective apprentices are given a skills assessment and a substance abuse screening. In addition to working alongside a skilled electrician, you'll also be required to attend 800 hours of classroom instruction during those five years.

Northern California Valley Sheet Metal Workers' Apprenticeship Program

    • The Northern California Valley Sheet Metal Workers' Apprenticeship program has apprenticeship positions available as a sheet metal worker, service technician, and testing and air balance technician. Sheet metal workers provide duct design and installation, roof decking, architectural sheet metal and other types of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning services. This is a five-year apprenticeship program that includes both hands-on work and classroom instruction. To apply, you must be 18 years or older with valid photo ID. Before you're admitted to the actual apprenticeship program, you'll need to take a pre-qualifying test, which is given on the first Tuesday of the month. They do have a free preparatory class available once a month to get you ready for the test, which might prove helpful as you must pass with a score of at least 70 percent. Once you pass the test, you must wait for an employer to sponsor you before you begin the apprenticeship.
