Apprenticeship Programs in Toronto

Toronto, Ontario apprenticeship programs allow students to learn new skills in a hands-on environment, and these programs are generally focused around professions that require advanced skills, including cooks, electricians, maintenance and carpentry. Apprenticeship programs can last from a few weeks to three years. Students will be required to complete several hours of on-site training.
  1. Electrician: Industrial Apprenticeship

    • This program is offered by Humber College, and it is offered on the North Campus of the school. The electrician apprenticeship program is broken up into basic, intermediate and advanced. The basic program is 8 weeks, and the two latter programs are 10 weeks. Class work will focus on technical theory and electrical skills, including assembly, repair, layout, electrical system wiring and testing. Students will be placed in a work environment, where they will have complete over 8,000 hours of training. Over 800 hours will be devoted to coursework. To be eligible for the program, students must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, and they must have completed grade 12 English and Mathematics. A science background is preferred.

    C.H.O.I.C.E. Apprenticeship Program

    • This program is a collaboration between Carpenters Union Local 27, YMCA, Toronto Community Housing, the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, and Housing Services, Inc. The goal of the C.H.O.I.C.E. is to provide pre-apprenticeship general carpentry training to people from low-income backgrounds. Once students complete this program, they may enter into a formal apprenticeship contract with Local 27. Students, however, may be required to work on a probationary period before being allowed into the union. Pre-apprenticeship hours may be used for the required hours for the full carpentry apprenticeship program.

    YMCA Apprenticeship Program

    • The YMCA Apprenticeship Program is offered by YMCA employment centers across Toronto, including Pickering, Etobicoke, Richmond Hill, North York, Scarborough and Whitby. This program is mainly geared towards young workers who are looking for the experience in order to gain financial freedom. Some programs, however, are offered to adults who have lost their job and are looking to gain additional skills. Students may also be able to qualify for federal public sector apprenticeship programs. Students will be working directly with employers in a wide range of industries. Interested applicants should contact their local YMCA office for additional information on available programs.
