How Do I Help Nursing Students With Unsatisfactory Clinical Performance?

Helping an "at risk" nursing student overcome challenges can take some time and preparation. Developing strategies to meet the needs of adult learners requires early intervention. A clinical practicum for nursing students is a hands-on-learning experience. You can improve unsatisfactory clinical performance over time by following a set of practical strategies.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a performance matrix. Using a spreadsheet, create three columns. In the first column, list student's clinical performance issues. For example, you might write, "Nursing students are failing to accurately read a thermometer." Title the first column "Clinical Performance."

You will need to title the second column "Action" and include the steps you will make to improve clinical performance issues. An example action might be, "Review of material, before students enter a clinical setting."

The last column will record your results and you will need to title it, "Outcomes." You will be able to record outcomes after each action has taken place.

    • 2

Develop a set of performance strategies. Unlike your action steps, your performance strategies expand on your plan to improve clinical performance. Choose and include at least five strategies. Write clear and understandable sentences. An example performance strategy might read, "Students will be exposed to successful techniques before entering a clinical setting."

    • 3

Pair nursing students with a mentor. The clinical nursing mentor you choose must be able and willing to help another student. Provide mentors with a crash course on mentor and mentee relationship building. Discuss the importance of satisfactory clinical performance and the role of each mentor.

    • 4

Conference with the nursing students and explain the performance matrix, performance strategies and each event that will occur. Define your role and the role of nursing students.

    • 5

Refer to your performance matrix and record outcomes. Do this, after you have implemented strategies and observed any changes. A possible outcome might read, "95% of nursing students approved their ability to think critically in a clinical setting."
