How to Help Pre-K Students With Number Matching

Teaching your pre-kindergarten students number-matching skills will set the foundation for all of their future math lessons. Children who are able to match numerals, number words and number sets, as opposed to just memorizing facts, will have a better understanding of mathematical concepts. Helping your pre-k students with their number-matching skills does not require an elaborate lesson plan. By incorporating number matching into your daily activities and playing games with your students, you will help ensure their mathematical success.

Instructions

    • 1

Number various items in your classroom, such as your students' tables and each play station.

    • 2

Label the numbered items with numerals, number words and number sets. For instance, if the art station is "station number three", it would be labeled with "3," "three" and three dots.

    • 3

Read books about numbers to your students. A couple of examples are "Ten Little Ladybugs" by Melanie Gerth and "Ten Apples Up on Top" by Dr. Seuss. Count the objects with your students.

    • 4

Instruct your students to create a number book. Each page of the book would represent one number. Your students write the numeral and word and draw pictures to represent the number. Encourage them to be creative with their pictures. You could also provide stickers.

    • 5

Create a set of flashcards with numerals, number words and number sets. Review the flashcards every morning during circle time.

    • 6

Play games that focus on number matching. For example, label plastic cups with numerals and number words. Give your students plastic bottle caps and have them take turns tossing the correct number of caps into each cup.
