How to Help Students With Decoding

Having strategies for decoding helps make reading more enjoyable and less intimidating for students. There is nothing more stressful than having to read out loud or even silently and come across unfamiliar words that cloud your comprehension. Fear and anxiety build as you ponder these mysteries. However, if students have the tools to figure out the unknown words, reading can be a pleasurable experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Preview the text with students. Ask the students to look for unfamiliar words.

    • 2

Tell students that when they come across a word they don't know, they should look for parts of the word that they do know. Identify any prefix or suffix that may help decipher the word's meaning.

    • 3

Give students a couple of words to practice on before they practice independently.

    • 4

Instruct students to use the other words in the sentence to help determine meaning.

    • 5

Read and discuss the sentence again once meaning is determined, to prove comprehension.

    • 6

Keep a journal of troublesome words to revisit at a later date for practice.
