How to: Identification Tags for Preschoolers

Identification tags allow all members of the faculty and staff to easily recognize students and learn their names. Creating ID tags at the beginning of the school year also allows young students to learn the names of fellow classmates while working on their reading skills. Identification tags for preschoolers do not have to be an expensive or time-consuming task. They can be made easily just by using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Word
  • Digital copies of student photos or school logo (optional)
  • Thick white or color paper
  • Laminator
  • Hole-puncher
  • Lanyards, string or ribbon

Instructions

      Decide the layout of the ID tags. In addition the student's name, you may want to include the school's name, logo, student photo, teacher's name, grade or classroom.

      Open up a new word processing document in Microsoft Word. Click "Insert" and select "Table." Select a 2-by-4 table. Adjust the size of the cells to fit the names and any additional information by dragging the cell lines up or down.

      Type up all the students' names inside the cells and add a photo, logo or other necessary information. The font type and size should be easy to read from a distance.

      Print out the tags on thick white or color paper. Light colors work best. You can also have the students color their own ID tag or decorate with a few stickers.

      Laminate the tags and cut them along the cell lines. Use a hole-puncher to create a hole at the top of the tag.

      String a lanyard, available at office supply stores, through the hole. Use ribbon or string as an alternative to the lanyard.
