How to Make an Alphabet Book for Preschoolers

Jump start your students' rapidly developing language skills by creating an alphabet book with the class. Alphabet books are an imaginative way to acquaint preschoolers with letters and the sound each letter makes. Once the students have mastered the alphabet they are ready to move on to simple three-letter sight words and emergent readers. As with any developmental goal, preschoolers will move through the basic stages of language development at their own pace.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide each child in the class with one sheet of construction paper to create a personalized cover page. Ask the child to choose a title for the alphabet book. Write the title in the center of the page along with the child's name and age.

    • 2

Supply each child with sheets of alphabet stickers, crayons, glitter glue, pieces of ribbon, die-cut letters, large buttons, colored feathers, washable markers and glue sticks to decorate the cover page. Set the pages aside to dry for several hours.

    • 3

Place 26 pieces of colored construction paper in a stack. Use a hole punch to make three holes along the left-side margin of the pages. Thread pieces of yarn through the holes and tie the yarn in a bow to hold the pages together.

    • 4

Show the pupils how to use a washable marker or large crayon to draw an uppercase and lowercase letter in the top right corner of each page, beginning with the letter A on the first page and ending with the letter Z on the last page of the alphabet book.

    • 5

Give each child an assortment of old catalogs, magazines, greeting cards and newspapers. Go around the room and help each child search for pictures and words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Help the students cut out the images using a pair of plastic safety scissors. Show the children how to use white glue or a glue stick to add the pictures to the corresponding alphabet page.

    • 6

Gather the students together during circle time and encourage each child to read their alphabet book to the class. If the children seem interested, allow the class to spend time asking questions about the other student's books.
