Trace a dice template and cut it out. Teachers or parents can pre-make the dice form or make a template. Very young children may not have the fine motor skills to draw their own dice form or cut it out with scissors. Older and more advanced preschoolers may be able to trace a dice template and cut it out with some adult assistance.
Use a ruler and a dark marker to draw two parallel lines that are each at least 16 inches long on the poster board. The lines should be 4 inches apart. Draw a top and bottom line connecting the two parallels. Divide this larger rectangle into four equal-sized squares with marker lines. Each square should be 4-by-4 inches in size.
Add two more 4-by-4 inch squares, with one on either side of the top square.
Cut the T-shaped set of squares out with scissors.
Invite the children to make a fold on each line. As the child folds the lines, the squares will form into a box (or dice) shape.
Tape the sides of the box/dice together. A teacher or other adult will need to help preschoolers with this step.
Look through child-friendly magazines with the preschoolers. Choose a theme for the dice such as animals, transportation, community helpers, letters or numbers. Ask the children to find and cut out pictures that match the theme. Each child will need six pictures, one for each side.
Have the children glue or tape one picture to each side of the dice.
