How to Make a Picture Daily Schedule for Preschoolers

Routine is important for preschool-aged children because it familiarizes them with what they do each day and when they do it. When preschoolers know what to expect next, they are more secure in their environment. A picture daily schedule is useful in a preschool classroom because this age group is not able to read yet. Simple pictures portraying each activity that takes place throughout the day gives your preschoolers a visual representation of what they are doing now, as well as what they will do later in the day. You can easily make your own picture daily schedule using photographs and art supplies you probably already have in your classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Take pictures of the areas of your classroom using a digital camera. Snap a picture of the table for snacks, the restroom, the playground, the circle time area, the art table and each of the centers you have set up.

    • 2

Print the pictures you take on photo paper.

    • 3

      Cut out each picture.

    • 4

Glue each picture to one paper rectangle.

    • 5

      Allow the glue to dry.

    • 6

Write the name of the activity next to the picture using a black marker.

    • 7

Place one paper rectangle with a picture onto a laminating page.

    • 8

Cover the paper rectangle with another laminating page. Press the second page firmly onto the first one to seal the paper rectangle inside.

    • 9

Trim the excess laminating page from around the rectangle.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 6 through 9 for the remaining paper rectangles.

    • 11

Affix a small piece of Velcro to the back of each laminated paper rectangle. Set the opposite side of each Velcro piece aside.

    • 12

Write the times your preschoolers engage in different activities throughout the day on your large piece of poster board. Use a black marker.

    • 13

Attach the opposite sides of Velcro you have reserved. Place one piece next to each time slot you have written on the poster board.

    • 14

Complete the picture schedule by attaching each activity next to the appropriate time slot by pressing the piece of Velcro on the back of the picture card onto the opposite piece on the poster board.

    • 15

Review the picture schedule each morning with your preschoolers so they know what they will be doing throughout the day.
