How to Make a Simple Portfolio for Preschoolers

Preschool portfolios allow teachers to keep track of each student's progress throughout the course of the class. These portfolios contain samples of the children's drawings, writings, classwork, physical growth, social skills and teacher's assessments. Teachers and parents can discover the child's progress by comparing the child's beginning work in each section to the more recent work. Portfolios are an organized method for teachers to discover in what areas the children may be struggling and need additional instruction.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what categories you would like to divide the portfolio into. Common preschool portfolio categories include: art, math, science, literacy, fine motor skills and social skills.

    • 2

Count the number of categories you have selected to include in the portfolio. Count out the same number of tabbed dividers and lay them on a work surface. Write one category's name on the tab of each divider with a marker. Write the category's name a second time in larger letters across the front of the divider.

    • 3

Decorate the surface of each divider with markers and stickers. Place the dividers in the order you wish them to be in the portfolio.

    • 4

Lay a 1-inch 3-ring binder open on the work surface. Open the rings of the binder. Place the dividers into the binder by threading their holes over the rings. Close the binder rings. Flip through the dividers to ensure that they are in the right order.

    • 5

Punch three holes along the side of each sheet of the child's work with a hole punch. Write the date that each project was completed in the corner of the work. Place the work in the binder on the rings behind the appropriate divider.
