How to Make a Bug City for Preschoolers

"Bug City" is a well-known children's book written by Dahlov Ipcar in 1975. It features colorful illustrations where bugs live in a city sleeping in bedbugs and eating fried potato bugs. After reading "Bug City" or another similar book, you can recreate the bug city for preschoolers. Use toys to form the cityscape and create ladybug finger puppets from a hands-on craft. It will teach young children all about bugs and how important they are.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the class into two groups. One group will begin building the bug city in the playroom while the second group will work on the craft. This works well for larger groups of children. If the preschool class is small, less than eight children, work on the bug city first.

    • 2

Form buildings with wooden unit blocks. Some preschoolers, especially those younger than four, need some guidance building the bug city. Help the younger children by constructing your own building with blocks. Older children will get started on their own and you should let them build by themselves.

    • 3

Use train tracks for roads and train tracks. Place vehicles around the buildings and train stations. These are how the bugs in the city get around. Be sure that all the children who want to participate can and allow other children to just observe if they are more shy about building the city.

    • 4

Set up toy play houses and other buildings up in the bug city area. Ask children what else if needed for a proper bug city. Provide other toys if needed and let the children play with the toys.

    • 5

Provide paper for the children to draw their own ladybugs. Children can also use printed out ladybugs and color them in with crayons. You can find free templates from DLTK and First School.

    • 6

Help the children cut out their ladybugs and a paper loop for the finger puppets. Offer glue to the children to glue the loops to their ladybugs. Allow them to dry and play with them in the bug city in the playroom.
