How to Make a Story Board for Children

Story boards can be a fun way to tell a story to children without the need for a book. The story can change with each telling, and the characters can say or do different things each time. Children can cut out and color their own characters and scenery, so as to be invested in the formation of the story from the beginning. Using a story board can be an especially fun activity for children who do not yet read.

Things You'll Need

  • Large piece of cardboard
  • Piece of flannel or felt, slightly bigger than the piece of cardboard
  • Glue or stapler
  • Small hook-and-loop fastener squares (rough, or hook, side only)
  • Cutouts of desired story characters and scenery

Instructions

    • 1

Place flannel or felt on the ground and place cardboard face down in the center of the fabric.

    • 2

Fold edges of fabric over the back of the cardboard, pull tightly, and affix to the cardboard with glue or staples. Allow to dry for several hours if using glue.

    • 3

Affix one hook-and-loop fastener square to the back of each story character. Larger characters or scenery pieces may need two or three hook-and-loop fastener squares spaced evenly along the back in order to hold them onto the flannel board.

    • 4

Tell stories using the story board by sticking characters and scenery onto the board and moving them around to suit the actions of the story.
