How to Make a Felt Board for Circle Time

A felt board can be used in an interactive way to get preschoolers corralled and learning during circle time. You can make a board themed around a story, the ABC’s, animals or numbers. Premade boards are available, but are often costly and limit you to the pieces that are supplied with the set. Making your own board is relatively easy and allows you to tailor the board to things that will most engage your preschoolers.

Things You'll Need

  • Iron
  • Neutral-colored flannel to cover the board
  • Cork board or piece of stiff cardboard
  • Spray craft glue
  • Duct tape
  • 8-by-10-inch swatches of felt in various colors
  • Fabric markers

Instructions

    • 1

Iron the flannel to remove the seams formed from folding.

    • 2

Cut the flannel slightly larger than the corkboard. Leave about a 2-inch border that can be wrapped around the back side of the board.

    • 3

Spray the cork board with glue. Lay the flannel gently on top and smooth out any wrinkles.

    • 4

Turn the board over, fabric-side down and fold the top border down. Secure the fabric with duct tape.

    • 5

Fold down the sides and bottom border and seal with more duct tape.

    • 6

Use coloring sheet patterns to cut out shapes that fit your felt board theme from the pieces of felt. Add detail with the fabric markers.
