How to Make an Owl for a Diorama

A diorama depicts a scene, real or imagined, in three-dimensions. Dioramas can be made in many different shapes and sizes. Some are life-size while others are meant to hang in a shadow box on the wall. Mixed media dioramas are interesting and fun to make because they include scenes and figures made out of different materials. When making a diorama that includes animals, felt is easy to work with and can add a new media dimension to the scene you want to depict, such as creating an owl.

Instructions

  1. Cut the Felt

    • 1

Cut out an oval shape from the brown felt that will be the body of your owl. It will be folded over and stitched so be sure it’s as big as you want when folded.

    • 2

Cut out two small circles from the white felt for the background of the eyes and two small circles from the black felt for the inside of the eyes.

    • 3

Cut out a tiny orange triangle for the nose. Cut two D-shaped pieces out of the blue felt for the wings.

    • 4

Glue the black inner eye onto the white background circle for the eyes. Lay the owl flat and use the stick pins on either side to attach the blue D-shaped wings facing inward. Pin on the eyes and nose with a stick pin.

    Sew the Owl

    • 5

Thread a needle with blue thread and stitch on the wings following the outline of them as you go. Tie and cut off the excess blue thread.

    • 6

Thread a needle with white thread and stitch on the eyes, following the perimeter of the circle as you go. Tie and cut off the excess white thread.

    • 7

Thread a needle with orange thread and stitch on the nose. Tie and cut off the excess orange thread.

    • 8

Fold the owl in half and stitch all around the outside of it, leaving an opening in the top. Push in the polyester fiberfill inside the owl and stitch the remainder of the outside of it.

    • 9

Place the owl inside your diorama and use craft glue to adhere it to a stick or wherever you would like it displayed.
