Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of the flip book. You will need one sheet of paper for each page of the book. Select the subject for the flip book. Some examples of subjects for flip books for kindergarteners include animals, parts of the body, cartoon characters, cars or plants.

    • 2

Draw a picture of each object on 8 ½-by-11-inch pages. Make sure that the objects on each page are equal in size. Make sure that the objects are in the same location on each page so that they line up easily when the pages are stacked.

    • 3

Color the pictures with markers, colored pencils, crayons or paint. Alternatively, leave the drawings as they are, and then encourage the kindergarteners to color the pages of the book.

    • 4

Create a cover for both the front of the book. Write the title of the book on the cover. Decorate the cover of the flip book with markers, stickers, colored pencils or any other embellishments of your choice. Alternatively, cut pictures from a magazine and paste them on the front. Use a blank sheet of colored paper for the back cover.

    • 5

Gather the pages of the book together. Staple all of the pages together down the left side, including the front cover and the back cover. Divide the pages into three even sections by using a pencil to lightly draw two horizontal lines on each page. Cut each page along the horizontal lines. Stop cutting when you reach the staples.

    • 6

Test out the flip book by turning the pages and mixing and matching the top, middle and bottom flaps of the page. For example, if you make an animal flip book, the child might create a turtle with a cow’s middle section and a horse’s legs. Let kindergarteners play with the flip book. Ask them what they would call the new animal they have created.
