Make a list of all the fractions the students currently know. For example, in the beginning, students learn 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 3/4, 2/3. On the front of each note card, write one fraction. As the student learns more fractions, add more pages to the flip book.
Turn over each note card and place the small tin can down on the card. Make sure the entire bottom of the can fits on the paper. Trace around the bottom of the can to make a circle on each card. This represents a pizza or a pie.
Draw equal pizza or pie pieces on each of the circles to represent different fractions. For example, if the note card's fraction is 1/2, draw 2 pieces. If the fraction is 3/4, draw 4 equal pieces.
Color in each pizza or pie picture to represent the individual fractions. If the front of the card says 1/3, color in one piece. Always color in the number represented at the top of the fraction.
Stack the note cards together and punch a hole in the top two corners. You might have punch a few cards at a time. Attach all of them with two metal clasping rings. Show the students the pictures and have them tell you the fraction it represents.
