How to Solve Division Fractions

A fraction is a mathematical expression that represents the relationship of a part to a whole. Just as you can divide whole numbers, you also can divide fractions. Some students in middle or high school are intimidated by the thought of having to divide fractions. Solving division fractions, however, is a much easier process than you might think. To divide fractions, you actually will only need to perform a few simple mathematical calculations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the division sentence. For instance, you might have 5/6 / 2/5.

    • 2

Flip the fraction being divided. This is known as creating the "reciprocal" of the original fraction. In this example, you would flip 2/5 to get 5/2.

    • 3

Multiply the two fractions once the second fraction is in reciprocal form. Multiply the numerators (top numbers) together and the denominators (bottom numbers) together. In this case, you would multiply 5 and 5 to get 25 and 6 and 2 to get 12. This would give you 25/12.

    • 4

Simplify the answer if necessary. In this case, you could simplify 25/12 to 2 1/12. This is because 12 will fit into 25 twice with 1 left over.
