How to Change a Division Problem to a Fraction

A fraction represents a rational expression that is meant to convey the proportionality of one quantity to another. Pre-algebra students learn to manipulate this fact to their advantage by changing division expressions into fractions. This conversion allows for several operations, such as simplification and factorization, that reduce the complexity of a division problem in many instances. The use of this technique is made throughout virtually all subsequent mathematics courses and is of value in terms of saving time.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an empty fraction. This is simply a fraction line with nothing in the numerator or denominator.

    • 2

Place the number being divided into the numerator of the fraction.

    • 3

Place the number that it is being divided by in the denominator. For example, the expression 15 ÷ 3 yields 15 / 3 as a fraction. Notice the division symbol, formally called an obelus, and its similarity to a fraction.
