How to Divide Through Multiplication

Division is a mathematical process that is the opposite of multiplication. In division, you calculate how many times one value will fit into another value. In some instances, you must use multiplication within the process of dividing one number into another. When you divide a value by a fraction, the easiest method of division is to utilize multiplication. You may encounter this type of division in middle school, high school or college math courses.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down your division problem. For example, 5/6 / 7/10.

    • 2

Convert the fraction begin divided into a reciprocal by switching the numerator and denominator. In this example, you would change 7/10 to 10/7.

    • 3

Multiply the reciprocal times the first fraction in the division sentence. In this example, you would multiply 5/6 * 10/7. Multiply both numerators and then both denominators. In this example, you would have 50/42.

    • 4

Simplify your answer if necessary. In this example, you have an improper fraction: 50/42. The number 42 will fit into 50 once with a remainder of 8. Therefore you would write 1 8/50. You can further reduce the fraction 8/50 to 4/25, leaving you with the answer 1 4/25.
