How to Change Multiplication to Division

Division and multiplication are closely related. If you know the figures in a multiplication problem, you can easily change it into a division problem by simply rearranging the numbers. You don't even have to carry out any additional calculation. With multiplication, you begin with two factors and solve for the product. For example, if the multiplication factors are 3 and 5, you would get a product of 15. With division, you begin with a factor and a product, then solve for the other factor.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the product of the multiplication problem. Using the example above, this would be 15.

    • 2

Write the division symbol (÷) after the multiplication product.

    • 3

Write one factor of the multiplication array. Using the figures from the multiplication example above, you can write either 3 or 5.

    • 4

Write the equal symbol (=) after the factor.

    • 5

Write the other factor of the multiplication. If you previously wrote 3, you would write 5. If you previously wrote 5, you would write 3 as the other factor. You can switch the placement of the factors and still obtain a correct division array.
