How to Change a Whole Fraction to an Improper Fraction

In math, fractions are either considered to be proper or improper. A proper fraction is one that is simplified as much as it can be. It cannot be reduced and the top number is smaller than the bottom number. An improper fraction, however, is one that could be reduced and the top number may be larger than the bottom number. While you may not run into many situations in real life where you would need to make a whole fraction into an improper one, it is an important aspect to learn so you can complete more complicated math tasks.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the denominator, which is the bottom number of the fraction, by the whole number that is located in front of the fraction. For instance, if you have the number 2 3/4, multiply 2 times 4 to get 8.

    • 2

Add the answer to Step 1 to the numerator, which is the top number of the fraction. In the example, add 8 to 3 for an answer of 11.

    • 3

Place the answer to Step 2 at the top of the fraction as the new numerator and use the same denominator as the original fraction as your denominator. This creates an improper fraction that is equal to your original whole fraction. In the example, you get the fraction 11/4.
