How to Multiply a Whole Number & a Mixed Fraction

Multiplication of mixed fractions, also known as mixed numbers, combines the multiplicative properties of two types of numbers. A mixed number is a value consisting of a whole number or integer and a fraction. Mixed numbers read as the sum of the whole number and its fraction. For example, 5 1/8 is just 5 plus 1/8. When multiplying another whole number or integer to a mixed number, the multiplication with each part of the mixed number can be treated as separate operations.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a whole number and a mixed number to be multiplied. For this example, allow the integer to be 6 and the mixed number to be 4 1/7.

    • 2

Multiply the separate whole number to the whole number part of the mixed number. For this example, 6 multiplied to 4 equals 24.

    • 3

Multiply the separate whole number to the fraction part of the mixed number. For this example, 6 multiplied by 1/7 results in 6/7.

    • 4

Combine the fraction product from the prior step to the whole number product from Step 2. For this example, combining 24 to 6/7 results in 24 6/7.
