How to Convert to a Mixed Numeral

In an improper fraction, the top number, or numerator, is larger than the bottom number, or denominator, making the value of the fraction greater than one. You can simplify an improper fraction into a mixed number, which is a whole number followed by a fraction of less than one. The process results in a number that is easier to comprehend, and involves simple division and substitution.

      Divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator. As an example, assume an improper fraction of 17/3. So 17 divided by 3 is 5 with a remainder of 2.

      Substitute the remainder of the result from Step 1 for the numerator of the original fraction. In the example, the substitution yields a new fraction of 2/3.

      Place the new fraction from Step 2 to the right of the whole number result of the division from Step 1 to get the mixed-numeral equivalent of your improper fraction. In the example, the mixed numeral equivalent of 17/3 would be be 5 2/3.
