How to Convert a Fraction to a Whole Number

Fractions are sets of numbers that illustrate the relationship of a part to a whole. You may encounter fractions in math classes ranging from upper elementary school through college. Some fractions are known as "improper," which means that the numerator (top number) is larger than the denominator (bottom number). In the case of improper fractions, you can convert the fraction to a whole number, plus a possible remaining fraction.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the fraction. For example, you might have 28/14.

    • 2

Divide the numerator by the denominator. In this case, you would divide 28 by 14 to get the whole number 2.

    • 3

Add an existing remainder as a fraction to the right of the whole number. For example, if you had 29/14, you would divide 29 by 14 to get 2 with a remainder of 1. The new figure would look like this: 2 1/14.
