How to Convert a Fraction to a Mixed Number

Converting fractions to a mixed number is a good skill for making fractions easier to understand. A mixed number is a whole number with a fraction. This part of math is called equivalencies. Many standardized tests require the ability to convert back and forth between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the improper fraction on your paper. For example, 27/4.

    • 2

Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). The number of times you can do that will be your whole number. In our example, 27 divided by 4 is 6 with a remainder of 3. Write 6 for the whole number

    • 3

Write the remainder as a numerator of a fraction that comes after your whole number. Use the same denominator you had in the improper fraction. Three was the remainder in our example so it becomes the numerator. Thus, our mixed fraction becomes 6 3/4.

    • 4

      Reduce the fraction if possible.
