How to Convert Fractions or Mixed Numbers to Percents

Fractions refer to portions of a number, represented by a numerator and denominator. For example, the fraction 1/4 means one out of every four. Mixed numbers have a whole number and a fraction, such as 3 and 4/5. A percentage equals the amount per 100. For example, an increase of 200 percent would mean that for every one you have, two more are added. An increase of 50 percent would mean for every two you have, one is added. You can convert from fractions to decimals and then decimals to percents.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the whole number in a mixed number by the denominator and add the result to the numerator to convert from a mixed number to a fraction. For example, if you started with 6 4/5, multiply 6 by 5 to get 30 and add 30 to 4 to find the equivalent fraction is 34/5.

    • 2

Divide the numerator by the denominator to find the fraction expressed as a decimal. In this example, divide 34 by 5 to get 6.8.

    • 3

Multiply the result by 100 to convert to a percentage. In this example, multiply 6.8 by 100 to find 6 4/5 equals 680 percent.
