How to Convert Big Fractions to Small Fractions

Simplifying, or reducing, fractions is important because it is easier to compare fractions in their smallest form. Most people know how much 1/2 is, but 16/32 may be hard to visualize. In this case, 16/32 can be reduced to 1/2. In most cases, fractions should always be expressed in their most reduced form, using the smallest numbers possible. This means it is necessary to know how to convert fractions with larger numerators and denominators to fractions with smaller parts. Simplifying fractions requires only simple division.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a number that both the top and bottom numbers of the fraction can be divided by evenly. If both the numerator and the denominator are even numbers, start with the number 2.

    • 2

Divide both numbers by the common factor, and write down your new fraction. In the example of 16/32, you would divide both numbers by 2 to reach 8/16.

    • 3

Compare the numerator and the denominator in this new fraction. Do they have any common factors? If so, you can simplify the fraction further by repeating steps 1 and 2. The example of 8/16 can be reduced again using the number 8. This reduction leaves us with 1/2.

    • 4

Continue until the parts of the fraction no longer have any common demonators greater than 1.
