How to Multiply Improper Fractions With Whole Numbers

Any two numbers can be multiplied together, including improper fractions and whole numbers. Improper fractions are fractions in which the numerator (top number) is bigger than the denominator (bottom number). This means they are bigger than 1, and can also be written as a mixed number. Whole numbers are numbers greater than 0 that can be written without needing a decimal point, like 1, 2, or 500. Multiplying an improper fraction by a whole number is very similar to multiplying two fractions together.

Instructions

    • 1

Rewrite the problem with the whole number written as a fraction over 1. When writing by hand, use this notation: 4 rather than 4/3, as it is clearer.

      ----

      3

      Example:

      4/3 * 4 =

      4/3 * 4/1 =

    • 2

Multiply across the top and write the answer on the right hand side, followed by a line or a slash.

      Example:

      4/3 * 4/1 = 16/

    • 3

Multiply across the bottom and write the answer on the right hand side, underneath the line or after the slash.

      Example:

      4/3 * 4/1 = 16/3

    • 4

If required, reduce the answer and convert it to a mixed number.

      Example:

      4/3 * 4/1 = 16/3

16 and 3 share no common factors, so the fraction cannot be reduced.

      Convert to a mixed number:

      16/3 = 3/3 + 3/3 + 3/3 + 3/3 + 3/3 + 1/3

      16/3 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1/3

      16/3 = 5 1/3
