How to Rename a Fraction as a Mixed Number for Fifth Grade Math

Renaming mixed numbers into improper fractions is a complicated concept for some fifth graders. Although at first glance, it may seem overwhelming, once you break down the steps and explain them, each fifth grader should have a better understanding. Each student must begin with some basic background knowledge of fractions.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the mixed number into a whole number and a fraction. Use an addition sign between them.

      3 1/2

      3 + 1/2

    • 2

Convert the whole number to separate fractions equaling one whole, using the denominator, or bottom number, in the fraction section of the original mixed number. For example, the whole number three would be separated into three fractions each equal to one. Add the fraction section of the mixed number to the fractions equaling one.

      3 + 1/2

      2/2 + 2/2 + 2/2 + 1/2

    • 3

Add all numerators, or top numbers in the fractions, together but keep the same denominator and do not add them to find the improper fraction.

      2/2 + 2/2 + 2/2 + 1/2 = 7/2

    • 4

Simplify the improper fraction if applicable. For instance, 7/2 is in its simplest form because the numerator and denominator do not share any common factors. On the other hand, you can simplify the fraction 22/8 by dividing the numerator and the denominator by a common factor: 2. The simplest form would be 11/4.
