Identify the numerator and denominator in the fraction. If the numerator, or the top number, is larger than the denominator, you have an improper fraction that can be changed to a mixed number. For example, 7/4 is an improper fraction because 7 is larger than 4.
Divide the numerator by the denominator. For example, in the fraction 7/4, divide 7 by 4. This will give you a quotient with a remainder. In this example, 7 divided by 4 equals 1 (the quotient) with a remainder of 3.
Use the quotient from your division problem as the whole number part of the mixed number. The remainder becomes the numerator in the fraction part of the mixed number, and the denominator will remain the same as in the improper fraction. In our example, 7/4 becomes 1 3/4.
