How to Turn a Fraction Into a Ratio

A fraction is written to define an equal part of a whole. The fraction is written using two numbers, one on top of the other, separated by a slash. The top number represents the number of equal parts used. The bottom number represents the number of equal parts the whole has been divided into. The fraction 4/5 is spoken "four fifths." By writing the fraction as a ratio, 4:5, it is now spoken "four to five."

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the fraction by the greatest common multiplier. For example, if the fraction is 5/20, then 5 is the greatest common multiplier. The fraction would reduce to 1/4.

    • 2

Write the numerator first. The numerator is the top number of the fraction. From the previous example, this would be 1. Then write a colon next to the number.

    • 3

Write down the denominator after the colon. The bottom number of the fraction is the denominator. Your final work will look like this: 1:5.
