Equations that include fractions can be cumbersome, especially if you have to perform multiple operations on it. For convenience, mathematicians often get rid of the fraction by using its inverse, or reciprocal, to turn it into a whole number. When you multiply a fraction by its reciprocal, you get a fraction that reduces to 1.

1
Turn the fraction upside down to create the reciprocal.
For example, the reciprocal of 1/2 is 2/1.
-
2
Multiply it by the original fraction.
1/2 * 2/1 = 2/2

3
Divide the numerator by the denominator to simplify the fraction into a whole number.
2/2 = 1.
