How to Make a Fraction Into a Whole Number

A fraction is a portion of a whole number. Sometimes, a fraction that is added or subtracted can be simplified back down into a whole number. In other situations, this is not possible, but a whole number is still desired. In this case, the fraction is converted to a mixed fraction from an improper fraction. Finally, the mixed fraction can be rounded to a whole number if rounding is acceptable.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the numerator -- or top number -- by the denominator -- or bottom number -- to obtain the whole number. For example 20/5 is simplified to 4/1, which is the same as 4.

    • 2

Write the value as a mixed fraction if the denominator does not fully divide by the numerator. For example, 17/4 leaves a remainder of one. Write it as 4 ¼.

    • 3

Round the mixed fraction to the nearest whole number if only a whole number is desired. For example, round 4 ¼ to 4, or round 4 ¾ to 5.
