How to Multiply a Fraction and a Whole Number

We know what to do with a fraction and a whole number, but put the two together, and some people are lost.

Multiplying a whole number and a fraction is quite simple, yet many people are still unsure of how to do this.

Learn how to multiply a fraction and a whole number, the easy way.

Instructions

    • 1

Change the whole number to a fraction. This is done by putting the whole number over 1. In this example, the whole number is 3 and the fraction is 3/4. We multiply the fraction and whole number by changing the 3 to 3/1.

Remember, any number over a 1 does not change the value of the number.

    • 2

      Multiply across. 3 X 3 = 9 (numerator) and 1 X 4 = 4 (denominator.) So, your answer is 9/4.

    • 3

Change an improper fractions to a mixed number. Our final answer would be 2 1/4 for this whole number and fraction.

To change to a mixed number, divide the top number (9) by the bottom number (4.)
