How to Enroll in School Without a Withdrawal Letter From a Previous School

Public schools guarantee education for every student living in the school district. Provided that you fill out the proper paperwork for the school, you should have no trouble enrolling your child into a new school. Schools only require a letter of withdrawal for students that leave school for homeschooling opportunities. If you homeschooled your child, then you must provide proof of his education.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the proper paperwork required for enrollment. You must act as the parent or legal guardian of the child. If you are a noncustodial parent, then you need a notarized statement giving you control over the child from the custodial parent. You also need immunization paperwork, proof of the child's residency in the school district and proof of the child's age.

    • 2

Request an enrollment form from the school or school district. Fill out the form completely, answering questions about your child's legal name, past schools attended and other information requested by the school. Return the form to the school in person or through mail.

    • 3

Ask your child's last school for a copy of his last report card and class schedule. Schools must know the grades your child last received, as well as the schedule, which shows the classes your child took. The school may also request a transcript that shows past classes the child completed.

    • 4

Send copies of your child's school record to the new school. The school looks at the past work in determining the new schedule for the child. The school should skip the child past classes he took in the past and offer new courses that fulfill the requirements of the state.

    • 5

Meet with a representative from the school and arrange for a tour of the facilities. The tour lets your child see the school for himself, meet with teachers and get a feel for the location. Once you file the paperwork, it should only take a short period of time before he begins classes.
