How to Get Help From the School for Your Child

Whether your child is struggling with his grades or has an issue with a classmate, getting help for him from the school he attends should not be a problem. A few methods of getting help from your school are feasible, depending on the issue and the severity of it. Resources and tips for helping your child in school are available online and in bookstores as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the issue or problem that you would like addressed by the school regarding your child before attempting to contact the school or anyone who works there. Gather your thoughts and think about the ideal solution before speaking with the school.

    • 2

Discuss the issue with your child before talking with a representative from his school. This will help you get a better idea about what is going on from his perspective, rather than solely working out a solution with the school or an administrator. Talking with your child one-on-one will also help you pinpoint specific issues and help direct you to contacting the proper person at the school. If the issue is related to finances, moving to a new address, or another external issue, your child may not need to be involved directly with the conversations you have with the school's administrators; you can speak with him privately. However, if your child is directly involved with a bully or another internal matter with his peers, you may choose to involve him within the meeting with the school administrators after speaking with him directly.

    • 3

Contact the school's administration office to speak with the principal or to schedule a meeting with your child's teacher if necessary. You can often find contact information on the school's website.

    • 4

Gather any information or documentation you may need (depending on the issue) when meeting with the school. This may include financial information (if applying for aid), homework papers, or any other documents relating to the issue.

    • 5

Before any meeting, ask your child how she would like the situation resolved so that you can anticipate the direction the meeting should go.

    • 6

Attend the meeting with your documentation at hand. The school will be able to help in areas such as financial aid, testing, special classes, and even bullying. The school is obligated to keep your child safe and educated, and meeting with them will help find a solution for your child's situation.
