How to Withdraw a Child From Kindergarten

You may be considering withdrawing your kindergartner from public school because you are moving, have found a private school to transfer her to or have decided to homeschool. Withdrawing your kindergartner from her school can be a quick and easy process as long as you communicate with the principal of the school so that it is known that your child is attending another school. However, in the U.S. there are only 14 different states in which kindergarten is mandatory, so if you live in a state where kindergarten is not mandatory, it is of less concern that your child is enrolled in another school.

Instructions

    • 1

Enroll your child in a public school kindergarten near your new home if you are moving.

Enroll your child in an accredited private kindergarten of your choice if you planned on sending her to private school. It is important to enroll your child in a school before you withdraw her from her current school in case of complications.

Research the homeschooling laws for your state if you plan to homeschool. Each state has different rules about how to go about homeschooling legally: you may need to file a private school affidavit or you may not need to do anything at all.

    • 2

Write a letter to the principal of the school confirming your child's withdrawal from the school. Make two copies if you would like to inform your child's teacher as well. Request your child's cumulative file and school records in the letter if you would like copies of these for your records.

    • 3

Visit your child's school to deliver your letter(s). The school may ask you to sign a form for its records. Have the principal or vice principal of the school sign your letter and make a copy of it for yourself so you have documentation that your child is withdrawn.
