How to Turn a Ratio Into a Decimal

Ratios tell us the relationship between two numbers. You must understand this concept before moving on to more advanced mathematical theories and processes. Express a ratio in one of three ways: with a colon, like 5:6, with a slash, like 5/6, or by writing out the elements, as in "five to six."

  Write down your ratio. This is typically expressed as two numbers with a colon in the middle. For example, if you have five hot dogs and six hamburgers, the ratio of hot dogs to hamburgers is 5:6.

  Divide the first number by the second, using either a calculator or pencil and paper. In our example, divide the first number (5) by the second number (6).
- 3
  Write down your answer. In our example, the answer is 0.83333333333 because that is the result of dividing 5 by 6. Feel free to round off the number as needed.
