How Do You Turn Decimals Into Percent?

Though symbols and placement separate values in decimal and percentage forms, the two forms are closer than they appear. A number's decimal point partitions the number, signifying that the digits on the decimal point's left are one or greater, and those on its right rest between one and zero, with each digit place having a specific name. The first place to the right of the decimal is called the tenths place, the second the hundredths and the third the thousandths. A percent, also known as a percentage, represents part of a value, and is written as a number with an attached percentage sign. Turning decimals into percents requires only a little rearrangement and decoration.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a zero to the right of the digit in the tenths decimal place if the value has no digit in the hundredths decimal place; otherwise, leave the original digit in the hundredths decimal place unchanged. For example, if the decimal is 0.6, rewrite it as 0.60. For the decimal number 0.75, the number would be left alone.

    • 2

Move the decimal point after the digit in the hundredths decimal place if the value has more than two digits after the decimal; if it has only two digits after the decimal, then lose the decimal point altogether. For example, the decimal 0.755 becomes 75.5, though the decimal 0.55 would just become 55.

    • 3

Write the percent sign "%" after the number. For both the preceding examples, 0.755 would become "75.5%" and 0.55 would become "55%."
