How to Make a Place Value Chart for Decimals

Many students will forget what they hear, but remember what they see. For these students, visual aids, such as charts and graphs, can help them grasp decimal place values more quickly. These charts show each place value in its own column with the name of that place value written above it. You can make these charts large and colorful to use as a teaching aid, or small and simple to give as a handout to each child.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a chart with two rows and a column for each place value. Include a column for the "Ones" place (the whole numbers), one for the decimal point and one for each decimal place.

    • 2

Write the name of the place value in the first row of the appropriate column. Leave the cell in the column for the decimal point empty or write "Decimal Point."

    • 3

Write a 0 in the second row of the "Ones" column, then place a decimal point in the next box.

    • 4

Write one digit in each of the decimal place columns. For example, if your chart names each decimal place through one hundred billionth, the number will look something like this: 0.123456789.

    • 5

Shade every three rows in a different color so that students can easily distinguish between the different groups, such as the thousandths, millionths and billionths groups.
