How to Make a Vocabulary Chart

Vocabulary charts are a study tool that students can refer to at any time. These charts are graphic organizers that display a vocabulary word and definition. You can also add other elements such as a picture representation, part of speech and an example sentence. By making vocabulary charts, students are likely to increase comprehension through repetition.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the vocabulary words to the students. Use all of the words in complete sentences and present the definition. Students will write the words down on a piece of paper, followed by the definition.

    • 2

Place a large piece of banner paper on the board in the front of the class. Use a marker to create a table with five columns on it. Label the columns from left to right: "word," "picture," "part of speech," "definition" and "sentence."

    • 3

Instruct the students to create their own chart in their notebook using a ruler and pencil.

    • 4

Demonstrate completing the chart using the first vocabulary word. Fill in the word, draw a simple picture of it -- if possible -- and fill in the part of speech. Ask the students to give you the definition and a sentence that correctly uses the word.

    • 5

Work as a class to complete the vocabulary chart. This part of the activity is still teacher-led, but interactive. Students will participate and offer the answers or suggest sentences for each individual word.
