How to Make Vocabulary Flip Books

Flashcards are a tried-and-true way to study vocabulary, but most students don't find them particularly exciting. Add interest to your students' vocabulary drills by having them make flip books instead of flashcards. Unlike an index card, a flip book has enough surface area to include the word, its definition, a sentence that uses it and a picture that represents it. Students can use the sentences and pictures as clues to remember difficult words before they look at the definitions.

Instructions

    • 1

Give students blank sheets of printer paper. Have them hold the sheets sideways and fold them into three equal parts. Now tell the students to unfold the sheets of paper and cut along the folds, producing three strips per sheet.

    • 2

Repeat the folding and cutting process until students have one strip of paper for each vocabulary word. Have them fold each strip of paper in half lengthwise, forming squat rectangles, and then unfold the strips again. Students should stack all the strips in a pile, even out the edges, and staple them together along the center crease.

    • 3

Tell students to fold the stapled pile of papers closed again, and turn the booklet so the stapled edge is at the top. Tell students to write a vocabulary word on the front page.

    • 4

Instruct students to flip up the top page so they are looking at page of double height inside the booklet. On the top half, above the staple, tell them to write the definition of the word. On the bottom half, they can use the word in a sentence, draw a picture that represents the word, or both.

    • 5

Have students flip up the completed page and write the next vocabulary word on the bottom half of the following page. They then flip it up and fill in the inside double page with the definition, sentence and/or picture. Students continue writing and defining words like this until they have completed their flip books.

    • 6

Tell students to study by quizzing themselves on the words. They can fold the top half of each page all the way back behind the bottom half of the booklet, hiding the definition, and review the sentences and pictures for clues before giving up and looking at the answers.
