How to Make a Pocket Chart for the Classroom

Pocket charts are frequently used in elementary school classrooms to display information. Some teachers display vocabulary words, days of the week or poems in their charts. Other ideas include frequently misspelled words, sentence starters or rhyming words. Pocket charts can be made from a piece of durable fabric and some type of clear plastic material to make the "pockets." Homemade pocket charts are inexpensive, and can be made to the exact size you require.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your fabric or poster board to the desired size for your pocket chart.

    • 2

Cut clear plastic "pockets" to the desired size. You can use the ends of laminate plastic from the laminating machine at your school, plastic sheet protectors, or even a clear plastic shower curtain.

    • 3

Attach the pockets to your fabric or poster board with colored duct tape. Tape the two sides of the pocket and the bottom of the pocket to the background, leaving the top of the pocket open so you can place pictures, sentence strips or student work inside.

    • 4

Mount your pocket chart on the wall using duct tape or on a bulletin board using thumb tacks.
