How to Make a Chart of Rules for My Toddler's Classroom

Structure and discipline are essential in the proper care of toddlers. Toddlers respond well to routine, both at home and in a school setting. In addition, toddlers learn from boundaries -- despite a normal inclination to test them. Creating a chart of rules for the toddlers in your care can instill a sense of structure and routine at the earliest of ages, and will ensure a safer and happier learning environment. While toddlers may not be able to read yet, they will likely understand the pictures you include on your chart.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a 3-inch space across the top of the poster board, using a ruler and a pencil. Underneath this space, lightly draw 10 straight lines -- separated by 1 to 2 inches -- down the poster board.

    • 2

Number each line "1" through "10" with a marker. Using thick lines and various colors of markers to make it stand out, write the title of the rule chart in the 3-inch space at the top. Alternatively, draw an illustrative picture, such as a stop sign, to help the toddlers understand the rule chart.

    • 3

Use a different color marker to write each rule on lines "1" through "10." Draw pictures to illustrate each rule. Depict a rule to share, for example, as two stick figures holding a toy together. Choose rules that relate to classroom activities and that promote good behavior.

    • 4

Allow the marker writing to dry. Erase each pencil line from the poster board. Hang the chart in a prominent place in the toddler's classroom.
