How to Make a Preschool Helper Chart

Preschoolers in the 3- and 4-year-old range are typically eager to learn how to do things for themselves, whether it's putting on their own clothes or cleaning up their toys. According to Susan A. Miller, Ed.D., author of six child development books, preschoolers strive for independence but still need reassurances from adults that they are doing something correctly. Creating a classroom helper chart for you preschool classroom will allow the children to take turns doing a certain job, teaching both independence and responsibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Write "Classroom Helpers" or something similar in large, bold lettering in the top center of a large white piece of poster board. Other name ideas for the helper chart include using your name, such as "Miss P's Helpers," or simply "Classrooms Jobs."

    • 2

Create a box graph with enough horizontal rows for students and vertical rows for the number of chores.

    • 3

Write the name of each student in the classroom in a row on the left-hand side of the poster board. Paste each child's picture next to his name.

    • 4

Place pictures of the specific chores across the top of the box graph with the name of the chore above or underneath the pictures. Laminate the poster board.

    • 5

Choose or allow the students to choose what they will be helping with, depending on how you run your classroom. Use stickers to designate what chore the student will be doing that day or week.
