How to Clean Up a Preschool Classroom

Preschool is time for children to make numerous wonderful discoveries. Preschool allows children a gentle opportunity to socialize with larger groups of children, to get used to a school environment, to play with a wide range of educational toys and to develop their fine motor skills. However, after a day of preschool, the average preschool classroom can look like a major rock group has torn it apart. Luckily, as the teacher, you're not alone when it comes to tidying up the classroom. Teaching preschoolers to help you clean up is a valid and appropriate activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Give children a gentle warning, 5 minutes before clean up time. This lets them know that they have a limited amount of playtime left and it prevents the end of playtime from feeling shocking.

    • 2

Divide preschoolers into pairs or "buddies." Give each pair a specific task. Demonstrate how to do each task. For example, show one pair of students how to sort toys into bins or baskets, so all the toys are put away neatly. Show another pair how to use a dustpan and broom to sweep up sand or other materials.

    • 3

Walk around the room, helping and supervising pairs of preschoolers complete their tasks. Praise each group and give them encouragement.

    • 4

Once all the preschoolers go home, walk around the room, checking their work. You may have to do finishing touches such as a final sweep around the floor or properly closing bins.

    • 5

Spray all the tables and chairs with an all-purpose cleaning spray and disinfectant. Wipe them down with paper towels.
