Provide a cubby for each student. Label the cubby with their name so they feel they have a space in the classroom that belongs to them.
Create a bulletin board with each child's name and a cute title. For example, Mrs. Smith's Shining Stars. Create stars with each child's name and the first day they arrive, take their picture and hang it next to their star. This is another way to show them they are part of the class.
Set up different learning centers around the room that children can explore and play in, such as a dramatic play area where they can play store, house or dress up. This builds cooperation and communication skills.
Place small tables and chairs around the room that children can sit and write at and eat snacks.
Place a large rug in an area by a board for teacher directed activities. This area is where children come to the carpet to sit together to listen to stories read aloud, sing songs or learn the calendar.
Provide a water and sand table in the classroom. Children play with water and sand to feel different textures and discover things that float versus items that sink.
Build a large library in the classroom filled with picture books preschoolers can read. Display the books on low shelves that are easy for them to access. Place a bean bag children can sit and cuddle up on to read a book.
