How to Teach Colors in a Preschool Classroom

Naming and identifying colors is one of the basic skills that children are generally expected to learn before entering kindergarten, but just because it's an important lesson doesn't mean it can't be enjoyable. Students in a preschool classroom are having their first experience with organized education. If they're drilled on colors over and over, they'll think of learning as work rather than exploration. Incorporate color lessons into your daily routine so children have time to focus on each color without feeling pressured.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the room with examples of colors. Cut shapes out of colored paper. Write the color's name on each shape and hang them at preschoolers' eye level.

    • 2

Make a second set of color shapes that you can hold up or pass around for children to hold. Laminate them to protect them from being torn.

    • 3

Hold up one color when students are gathered together in the morning. Ask children if they know what color it is. If no one knows, give the name and ask students to repeat it.

    • 4

Ask children to look around the room for examples of other things that are the same as the color you're holding. Once they've named several things, ask them to think of other objects they've seen that are the same color.

    • 5

Hold up another color the next day and repeat the process. Once children have named things that match this color, hold up the first day's color again. Ask children to name it again and repeat some objects that are the same color.

    • 6

Repeat this process every day. Talk about a new color and review the colors you've previously talk about.

    • 7

Name the colors you see throughout the day. Ask students to go sit on the blue carpet or name the color markers you're handing out. For instance, say "Here's a green marker for John, a red marker for Sam..." and so forth.

Make games out of colors. Give each child a bowl full of colored beads and ask her to sort them into piles based on color. Pass out magazines and ask children to cut out pictures of certain colors.
