How to Teach Spanish in Preschool

More and more children are learning a second language, with Spanish a primary one in the United States. Some children start learning Spanish as early as preschool. Preschool-age children are especially receptive to new words, which makes learning another language somewhat easier. Here are a few helpful tips on how you can teach Spanish in preschool.

Things You'll Need

  • Spanish printouts to color
  • Radio
  • Maracas and other Spanish-sounding instruments

Make Spanish fun through crafts. You can visit various websites online and print out Spanish coloring sheets. Have preschoolers color the coloring sheets and explain to them what is on the sheet (both in English and Spanish). If you are teaching the colors, have the child color that picture in the specified color. You can do other crafts as well, such as painting or gluing magazine pictures to construction paper.

Teach Spanish through music. Preschool-age children love to sing and dance. Let your preschoolers make music with Spanish-sounding instruments such as maracas and tambourines. You can play some Spanish songs on the radio such as "La Bamba" or "Alfabeto" and have the children sing, dance and play the instruments with the music.

Teach with flashcards. Hold up colored cards to teach the colors in Spanish (or pictures of objects to teach those words in Spanish). Say the word in English and have the children repeat it. Then say the word in Spanish and have the children repeat it. Once you go through the words, see if the children remember; hold up the flashcard and have them tell you the word in Spanish. If they don't remember, say it for them. After repeating the process several times, the preschoolers will begin to remember and identify the words in Spanish.

Play games. Preschool-age children love games, and playing games will help make learning Spanish fun. You can also use objects such as sombreros or ponchos during your game. Hide an object under the sombrero. Have the children try to guess what the object is by giving them clues (such as it is red and a fruit--an apple). Once they guess it in English, have them say the word in Spanish as well.

Get the parents involved. Preschoolers will learn Spanish best if their parents continue teaching them and reviewing Spanish words at home. For instance, a parent can ask her child how to say "hi" in Spanish. If the child doesn't remember, the parent can say the word and have the child repeat it. After repeating it several times, the child will learn how to say "hi" in Spanish. Continue this process with other words.
