How to Teach Friendship to Preschool Children

Teach preschool students about the importance of being a good friend by encouraging them to participate in social activities, friendship crafts and classroom introductions. Teaching the value of friendship can help children understand how to cherish and keep their friends as they grow older. Help the children become friends with everyone rather than forming exclusive groups. Model friendly behavior with teachers, other adults and students so that the kids can learn from your example.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask each student to introduce him or herself in front of the class. Encourage the students to tell the class interesting details about their life or interests. This activity helps kids get acquainted with everyone in the classroom.

    • 2

Split up the kids into groups of two when making crafts, coloring or working on other activities. Choose crafts based on collaboration and encourage them to help each other complete projects. For instance, each child could paint a portrait of her new friend and then give it to the other as a gift.

    • 3

Read to them age-appropriate books about friendship such as "Ivy and Bean" by Annie Barrows, "Friendship According to Humphrey" by Betty G. Burney or "Frog and Toad Are Friends" by Arnold Lobel. Highlight the lessons of give-and-take, sharing and mutual respect.

    • 4

Talk about the importance of friendship with the class. Ask the children why it's vital to have friends and encourage them to make new friends while keeping their old buddies.

    • 5

Facilitate group activities and outdoor games so that kids can spend time together and develop friendships. Have them play soccer, hopscotch and other types of games. Don't allow the kids to leave any children out. Encourage everyone to participate, cooperate and get along.
